What is an STD test?

An STD test is a type of diagnostic test that detects sexually transmitted diseases. These tests are highly beneficial for the diagnosis, treatment, or management of STDs to reduce the risk of spreading diseases to others and complications. The North Tex MedCare Clinic and Urgent Care team offers an array of STD tests based on your risk factors.

Which diseases can STD tests detect?

Common STDs the North Tex MedCare Clinic and Urgent Care specialists can detect and help treat include:

  • Gonorrhea
  • Chlamydia
  • Hepatitis
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV)
  • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
  • Genital herpes
  • Trichomoniasis

Early detection and treatment is critical if you have an STD. While not all STDs are curable, treatment helps you manage bothersome symptoms and reduce the risk of spreading viruses to a sexual partner.

What are the symptoms of STDs?

STDs can cause the following symptoms:

  • Unusual vaginal or penile discharge
  • Burning or painful urination
  • Bumps or sores on or near the genital region
  • Unpleasant genital odor
  • Pain during sex
  • Unusual vaginal bleeding
  • Rash
  • Fever
  • Lower abdominal pain
  • Swollen or sore lymph nodes in the groin

However, not all STDs cause symptoms — at least not early on.

What should I expect during STD testing?

STD testing at North Tex MedCare Clinic and Urgent Care includes a discussion about your symptoms, lifestyle, risk factors, medical history, and medications. Your provider completes a physical exam, including a pelvic exam in women if necessary. They may suggest you undergo blood testing, urine tests, or swabs —  and send the sample to a lab to be analyzed.

What do my STD test results mean?

After North Tex MedCare Clinic and Urgent Care receives your STD test results, the team discusses them with you by letting you know if you have one or more STDs. If so, they tailor a treatment that may include taking medications and routine monitoring. During STD treatment, it’s important to avoid sexual contact and have your partner tested. Repeat STD testing as often as needed.

If you have STD complications, such as precancerous or cancerous tissues detected by a Pap smear, your specialist provides referrals.
